The Soft Summer Palette

Of the three axes this site measures, Soft Summer is defined most by the third. Its undertone is cool and its depth sits at medium, but its chroma is soft — softness is the season’s centre of gravity, and the palette below is quiet from end to end. The conventional metal for this cool undertone is silver.

The palette

The verified names: dusty rose, mauve and soft plum on the rose side; sage and muted teal on the green side; and gray blue alongside grey-blue — which, as the spelling suggests, is one colour recorded under two names rather than two colours. Nearly every entry carries a quieting word — dusty, muted, soft, grey — and sage holds the same register without needing one. That shared prefix is the palette’s whole logic.

Conventionally avoided

• Neon brights — maximum chroma set against a soft-chroma season; the mismatch could not be more direct.
• Black — a hard, deep extreme in a palette built to avoid extremes.
• Orange, including bright orange — warm in undertone where this season runs cool, and loud in chroma where it runs quiet.

The honest bit

A season is a region, not a fence. The seasons bordering this one share most of the same wardrobe, and a result that lands near a border is normal rather than wrong. The finder publishes its point spread for exactly that reason: so you can see the margin as well as the name.
