The Light Summer Palette

Light Summer is a cool season at its lightest depth, with chroma kept soft rather than clear. Read that as three settings on three separate dials: the undertone leans cool, the overall value stays light, and every colour arrives slightly greyed instead of at full strength. Silver is the conventional metal match for the cool side of the undertone axis.

The verified names for this season are soft pink, rose pink and dusty rose; lavender, periwinkle and powder blue; and, rounding out the set, light gray and seafoam green. Notice the internal logic the names carry on their own. The pinks step gently from soft to dusty. Lavender, periwinkle and powder blue share one powdery register. Nothing in the list is dark, and nothing is sharp.

Conventionally avoided

• Black — far too deep for a light-depth season; it turns contrast into the whole story.
• Dark browns — deep and warm at once, missing the light setting and the cool one.
• Orange — warm in undertone, directly at odds with the cool axis.
• Warm earth tones — the same undertone mismatch, spread across a whole family.
