The Dark Winter Palette
Dark Winter is the deep end of the cool seasons: cool in undertone, deep in depth, and still bright in chroma — richness without mud.
Depth is what sets this season apart from the other Winters. The undertone stays cool and the chroma stays bright, but the value scale shifts down: dark colouring, and colours worn dark to match. Silver remains the conventional metal. Some schools call this season Deep Winter.
The palette
Eight names, and almost all of them live in the lower half of the value scale. Black and charcoal are the neutrals; navy and pine green the dark, cold hues; burgundy, deep plum and deep purple the depths. True red is the one full-voltage exception — the single colour here that is more loud than dark, and it stays because it is clean and cool, not because it is deep.
Conventionally avoided
The avoid list splits along the two axes this season holds firmly. Light pastels and dusty pastels fail on depth and chroma at once — too light for a deep season, and dusty besides. Muted dusty shades fail purely on chroma. Golden browns, warm earth tones and orange fail on undertone: their warmth pulls against a cool base, however deep they are worn.
Shared borders
Like every season, Dark Winter borrows most of its wardrobe from its neighbours; the palette above marks a centre of gravity, not a fence. When the finder scores you, it shows the whole point spread — and a Dark Winter result with a strong runner-up is telling you exactly where your own border lies.
